Dave, many congratulations on being named December Star of the Month!
Could you give us a quick introduction to yourself and your role at Harrison?
I've spent almost 28 years working in logistics, mainly in automotive and the associated areas. I have experience in setting up supply chains, freight forwarding, shipping, customs clearance & haulage - right through to the front end stuff like storage & distribution. My role at Harrison is Divisional Warehouse & Production Manager. I manage a distribution facility based in Evesham, Worcestershire where I am responsible for ensuring that a large number of shipments are sent out each day to our customers, along with managing the busy production department in which we convert raw materials into cut lengths & die-cut designs.
How do you think your colleagues would describe you in 3 words?
I think my colleagues would describe me as upfront, open & honest. In business I believe this to be the best approach, no one likes to be told about a problem, people generally only want the good news - but by sharing things we can collectively identify & agree the best solutions.
What was your initial reaction to being voted star of the month?
I've only been with the company for three months, so to be nominated by my colleagues was a great surprise. I have been made to feel very welcome by everyone in all departments. The team are very professional & they all co-operate well under pressure.
Your colleagues voted for you in recognition of the hard work you and your team have put in over the last few months, is there a particular project or win that you are especially proud of?
So much work & effort goes into running the business from all areas, so to have recognition for the warehouse & production team from each of the other departments is really appreciated. The biggest win so-far I would say is handling a large increase in production. The warehouse & production facility is being put to the test now & with this larger building we are confident that we are both prepared & able to increase the scale of the business even further in the coming years.
What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?
The most interesting aspect to the role for me is its newness. There is such potential to use all of the space & equipment. I'm enjoying having to create new (logistics & production) teams, bringing in the right people is key to the success of the business. Then right through to projects of buying new MHE (materials handling equipment) & having a new canteen area installed. There is a lot going on.
What about outside of work? Could you describe your perfect weekend for us?
My perfect weekend is quite simply spent being with my wife & our two whippets. We live in between the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve & the Malvern Hills - so there are plenty of scenic walks to enjoy.
Finally, If you were to go for a drink with any 3 people from history, who would they be and why?
The thought of being sat in a room having a drink with three of the undead would scare me to death myself. I’d rather enjoy the company of the living :-)
